My observations from when we walked around the Aroma and Baseco slums are:
people are very welcoming;
lots of rubbish everywhere and the slums are basically built on rubbish;
it is hard to get around because the streets are uneven and sometimes flooded. So there is always bags of sand and bits of rocks or planks to use as stepping stones. You also have to be careful not to bump your head on electrical wires or pieces of metal and wood jutting out from the makeshift houses;
all sorts of wires are tangled across the electrical posts;
there are lots of stray cats and dogs and their faeces everywhere;
there are roosters kept in cages that are used for cock fighting;
there are lots of small shops but no big shops;
there are no cars in the slum;
there are lots of kids and babies.
